In the spirit of the Foundation for Tropical Agricultural Research we support students, PhD candidates and postgraduates of the Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute for Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences.

HUG accepts applications for both research projects and scholarships for postgraduates finishing their master’s thesis in developing countries. Scholarships are aimed at students with a focus on tropical research.

Since 1999, HUG and the Foundation for Tropical Agricultural Research work hand in hand in granting the foundation’s funds. Since 2019, HUG is responsible for all applications and grants.

Applications

Who can apply?

Every member of the Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute for Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences is eligible.

What Kinds Of Projects Can Be Funded?

According to her statutes, HUG can cover costs for

• Materials
• Advertisement- and marketing, both digital and print
• Technical equipment
• Brain work (design of a website, editing, translations, …)
• Photo and video recordings
• In selected cases we can also cover travel expenses, accommodation and catering

What Cannot Be Funded?

• Non-academic projects
• Printing of thesis papers and dissertations
• Travel expenses and accomodation
• Fees for speakers
• Study grants and tuition fees

Requirements

• Signed application form
• Exposé including budget
• Studienbescheinigung of the main applicant

Submission
Applications may be submitted all year round. However, they must be submitted digitally as a single PDF file to antrag@hug-berlin.de six weeks prior to the starting date. Scholarships for Tropical Agricultural Research

Who Can Apply?

The Foundation for Tropical Agricultural Research offers financial support for postgraduates planning a research stay in a developing country.

HUG and the Foundation cover

• Travel expenses
• Monthy allowance for a stay abroad (up to three months)
• Fixed allowance for health/accident insurance, vaccinations, prophylactics (€40/month)

Notes On The Application Process

Requirements

• Signed application form (tropical agricultural research)
• Statement of the supervisor
• If necessary additional statements
• Confirmation from the examination office about examinations completed (including grades)
• Letter of invitation from the respective Institute/Organisation abroad
• Air fare information (several offers)
